If you're just surviving, maybe you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, downhearted, unsure of who you are, or struggling with relationship concerns, therapy might be right for you . Whether you've had these feelings as a result of a challenging life event, or something that you've been trying to overcome for a long time, we can work together to help you thrive. I primarily do body-centered styled psychotherapy through a trauma informed lens.

Body-Centered Psychotherapy

  • A process that recognizes the intimate relationship between the human body and the psychological well-being of a person.

  • The body is a resource for self-discovery and healing.

  • It gives individuals access to memories, emotions, and beliefs that are otherwise beyond words and cognition.

  • It can be beneficial to people who are experiencing a wide range of complaints, including: physical, emotional, relational or traumatic.

Trauma Informed Therapy

  • Noticing and embracing that trauma is the expectation, not the exception – all beings experience trauma, just different levels

  • Awareness of how trauma effects the brain, body, spirit, sense of the world

  • Asking “What happened to you?” versus “What’s wrong with you?”

  • Minimize re-victimization and facilitate recovery for all individuals in the most culturally sensitive way possible, taking into account culture, race, gender, sexuality, spirituality, and other factors

  • Behaviors are understood not merely as complaints but as attempts to cope and survive

  • Services are based on the principles of safety, voice, choice and control as defined by the individual seeking services (Source: National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare)

Kind Words:

“Working with Shelley Nielsen has been a wonderful experience this past year.  She has a way of teaching you how to tap into your inner strengths to calm yourself during a crisis.  I have been enlightened by the many ways that she has helped me with the whole body experience during counseling.  The most refreshing difference in Shelley’s style of therapy is that it is a mixture of yoga (a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation (think deeply or focus one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purpose or as a method of relaxation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation), holistic (the characterized by a treatment of the whole person, taking into account the mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease) and self-awareness (the awareness of a one’s own personality and /or individuality) therapy; it can help you to balance your life and health.  It has been the best therapy that I have ever experienced; it has helped me to manage my anxiety on a daily bases. I would recommend her for anyone looking to go to another level in their therapy.” – FeLisa M.
